Sustainability Policy

Vanessa Jayne Design is a floral design business that provides seasonal and sustainably sourced floristry arrangements, installations and workshops.

We recognise that the floristry industry can have a negative impact on the environment through pollutants and the carbon footprint associated with growing and distributing foliage and flowers.

At Vanessa Jayne Design, we believe we have a responsibility to our customers and the planet to minimise the environmental impact of our work. This policy outlines the steps we are taking to achieve this and our targets for the future.

Supply chain

  • We source flowers and foliage grown in the UK year around, as opposed to importing produce from other countries which has a greater carbon footprint.
  • Where possible, we work with local growers to further reduce our carbon footprint.
  • We will continue to nurture our relationships with local and national growers to source the best produce, ensuring quality, traceability and sustainability throughout the supply chain.
  • We aspire to grow more of our own produce in future to ensure additional control of our supply chain.
  • When sourcing non-perishable products, we take steps to ensure sustainability wherever possible (e.g., using FSC certified wood, Fair Trade produce, or working with brands and suppliers with a similar environmental ethos to our own).

Waste

  • All natural waste including used floral designs is designed to be compostable.
  • We compost all green waste produce ourselves and encourage our customers to do the same.
  • All floral mechanics are designed to be reusable and we reuse mechanics across successive designs and installations.
  • We encourage our customers to reuse or return non-compostable products.
  • We avoid single-use plastics wherever possible. We will continue to work with our suppliers to identify and reduce any single use plastics in the supply chain.
  • We never use floral foam or other floristry products containing microplastics or other known pollutants.
  • We complete our communication, quotations, invoicing, banking and electronically. We only print where 100% necessary.

Transport

  • Our company vehicle is compliant with current ultra low emissions zone (ULEZ) targets and Euro 6 emissions targets.
  • We aspire to invest in additional sustainable transport options in future.

Energy

  • We aim to reduce energy usage in our studio by making use of natural light when possible, switching off lighting and equipment when not in use, and ensuring temperature and heating controls are accurately set.
  • We reuse waste water wherever possible – for example, to water plants or hydrate new installations.
